Dr. Shihab M. Ghanem is an engineer, a manager, an economist, a poet and a translator of poetry from Arabic to English and vice versa.
He obtained a double degree in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from Aberdeen, UK, in 1964, certificates in Industrial Administration and Management of Men (with distinction) from UK (London and Birmingham), a post grad diploma and a Master of Engineering degree (1st class div.) in Water Resources Development from Roorkee, University, India, in 1975 and a Ph.D. in Economics in the fields of industrialization and human resources development from Cardiff, UK, in 1989.
He is a UK Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers of UK and a Fellow of the Institute of Management of UK and a member of various other technical and literary bodies in the UAE and overseas. . He was also the Chief Editor of “World of Engineering”, the UAE Society of Engineers’ Technical Magazine from 1996 to 1999. He was a committee member of Al Muntada Magazine and a member of the advisory committee of the literary magazine Shuoon Adabiyah.
His working career includes working as an engineer for GEC in UK (1964-66), as the Director of Planning and Statistics and Deputy Permanent Secretary of Public Works and Communications in Aden (1966-72), and as Chief Engineer of Eterno Supplies in Lebanon (1972-74), as Plant Manager of Gulf Eternit in Dubai (1974-85). During 15 years from 1988 till retirement in 2003 he worked for the Dubai Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation as:
Director of Engineering, then as
Advisor to the Executive Chairman and Director of R & D, and finally as
The Managing Director of Mohammed Bin Rashid Technology Park.
Currently he is the Managing Director of INDUSTECH Consulting.
He was the Deputy Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Advisory Committee of the Dubai Higher College of Technology and a member of the Business Admin, Accounting and e commerce committee.
His book “Industrialization in the United Arab Emirates” published in the Avebury Series, UK in 1992 is a main reference on the subject. He also wrote 2 chapters of the reference work on UAE titled “United Arab Emirates: A New Perspective” published in 2001 by Trident Press, London. He has also published a large number of technical and literary papers and articles in English or Arabic. He has published 30 books including 8 books of verse in Arabic and one in English and several volumes of translated verse, from Arabic to English and from English, Malayalam and other languages to Arabic via English. He contributes regularly to literary magazines and newspapers in UAE, Saudi Arabia Kuwait, Yemen, Egypt and other countries.
He has participated in more than 120 technical and literary coferences in many countries and presented papers at some of them.
He has received Al Owais Prize for Research, Rashid Award for Scienfific Excellence!st Dubai Govt Excellence Program Certificate of appreciation for distinguished employee, 1st prize for poetry in the UAE in 1984, book of verse prize from Abha in Saudi Arabia, book prize from Sharjah book exhibition shared with Slovak ambassador for a book of poetry translations, and several other literary
